Manufacturing District: Hamadan, Iran
Material: Wool with cotton warp
Number of knots per square meter: approx. 150 - 220,000 knots per square meter
Hamadan province is located in Northwestern Iran and the district is very famous for carpet manufacturing. It is believed that it was the beginning of the 17th century that the first carpets from Hamadan were produced. Today, the province is one of the largest producers of hand-knotted carpets in Iran, and this is due to, among other things, the durable wool used for mat manufacturing. Most Hamadan rugs are made in homes and the quality of the wool is somewhat coarse with a symmetrical knot. One also finds greater variation in the motifs compared to other districts. Many of the remote villages have given names to special motifs that they have created themselves and some names have been given to special motifs that have no definite place of origin. The most important of these are Mehraban, Nanadje, Hosseinabad, Jozan, Malayer, Saveh, Shahsavand, Ingelas. Nanadje is a strong type knotted with fine shiny sheep's wool and generally denser than other Hamadan qualities.
