Manufacturing district: Azerbaijan, Iran heriz Material: Wool with cotton warp Number of knots per square meter: approx. 120-250,000 knots per square meter Heriz rugs are Persian rugs from the Heris area in northwest Iran, northeast of Tabriz. The carpets are produced in a village of the same name on the hills of Sabalanberget. Heriz carpets are extremely durable, usable and last for several generations. 19th century examples of these rugs are often found at auction houses in the US and Europe. New Heriz carpets are thick, tough and often very affordable. The rugs age well and will become more beautiful with age. One reason why the carpets are so durable is that Sabalanberget has a lot of copper. Traces of copper are found in the drinking water that the sheep drink, which leads to them producing high-quality wool that is more durable than wool from the rest of the country. Heriz rugs are often tied in geometric, bold patterns with a large medallion dominating the rug. These designs are traditionally often tied from memory. Similar rugs from nearby towns and villages such as Ahar, Heris, Mehraban, Sarab, Bakhshaish, and Gorevan are often referred to as Heriz rugs but cannot be compared to original Heriz rugs.
