The Bidjar mats are also called "iron mats" because they are incredibly durable. The reason for the high quality and durability is the unique knotting method. Most Bidjar rugs have the Turkish symmetrical knot. Modern Bidjar rugs are usually double woven with cotton warp, but there are also higher quality ones that have silk elements. Antique Bidjar rugs are knotted with wool warp and woven three times between each knot. This makes the mats very hard, durable and heavy. The number of knots on the Bidjar carpets varies from 250,000-700,000 knots per square meter.
The colors are earthy with dark blue and strong red tones. Common designs are Herati, Mina Khani and multi-frame medallions. The Bidjar carpets come from an area in northwestern Iran where the majority of carpet weavers are Kurds.
