Carpet knotting is a really old tradition in Täbriz and the city is known for its fine carpets. Here you will find a large variety of different Täbriz carpets, all of which are quality-assessed by raj. The name defines the number of knots in 7 centimeters of the carpet's width. The rugs are available in the simpler bazaar quality of 24 raj up to an incredible 110 raj. For example, if a carpet has 1,000,000 knots per square meter, it is defined as 60 raj.
Täbriz rugs have many different kinds of designs from medallions, Herati, Mahi, to figural motifs with flower, vase, tree and hunting themes, even 3D motifs. The carpets from Tabriz are among the best in Iran and are available in different qualities. Korkull (the best sheep's wool) with silk elements is used to make finer rugs. A fine Täbriz carpet also has a short rough pile and high raj.
